Assembly and Usage Tips

How much water pressure does it take to operate the system?

The Chicken Fountain™ functions properly between 1 PSI and 120 PSI. This makes it ideal for bucket, rain barrel and direct connection to a garden hose. Operating outside of this range can result in your fountain malfunctioning. Typically household water pressure is between 60 PSI and 80 PSI so this is normally not an issue.

Are these made in the USA?

Yes they are! Every unit is hand built in Cornelius, about 30 miles north of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Our chickens are pretty rough with things. Are these durable?

All Chicken Fountain systems are constructed with high quality materials. The main body is an all-weather resistant poly with a brass hose connection.

Can you use this with other types of fowl?

Yes, we have customers using The Chicken Fountain with quail, pheasants, peafowl, turkeys, ducks, and geese. We also have customers using it with rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, and barn cats.

Can I use apple cider vinegar or other supplements in The Chicken Fountain™?

Yes, you sure can. Water soluble supplements are safe, and all of our internal parts are stainless steel or copper which are impervious to the acids in apple cider vinegar. It is important that you do not over do it. A ratio of one ounce to one gallon of water twice per week should be sufficient. It will not only help with the health of your birds but will help in keeping The Chicken Fountain™ fresh and clean.

Usage Tips

How can I keep the system from freezing?

There are many methods to keep The Chicken Fountain from freezing, but first let's clarify that there are multiple stages of the system that can be exposed to freezing. There is the water source, garden hose, main fountain reservoir, and the actual dripper. One measure to take is installing the winterizing kit. This is essential in all cold weather scenarios because it targets the drippers which are the most susceptible  to freezing. In mild winter conditions this may be enough protection. In addition, The Chicken Fountain main body, and your water supply may need insulation from severe cold. For the main body a small submersible heater, sometimes called bird bath de-icer can be used. This combined with the winterizing kit works in mild climate conditions. For extreme weather, alternative measures may be necessary such as protecting the water supply and/or your garden hose. There are products available to keep the hose warm and/or flowing to prevent freezing.

More on the Winterizing Kit.

One of my drippers consistently drips even when not being used by the birds. How do I stop it?

Sometimes a little piece of debris can get caught in the system which prevents the dripper from sealing up completely, causing a drip. The fix is an easy one. Start by placing a colander or bowl  under the dripper. This is just in case something drops as there are three parts inside: two rods and a stainless ball.  Hold the dripper at the tip and unscrew the outer half of the dripper counterclockwise.  The dripper will split in half, leaving one half fixed to the pipe. Wash all of the parts, including the piece of the dripper that was removed, with some white vinegar. Make sure that nothing is caught down in the dripper. To reassemble, place the long rod in the dripper half still connected to the pipe, making sure it goes back through the dripper half and points into the pipe. The short rod points out to the birds and the ball is inside the dripper. Don’t over tighten the dripper, just snug it up.

Teaching chickens to drink from The Chicken Fountain™

Birds are naturally curious and will be interested in The Chicken Fountain as soon as it is installed.

Removing their current source of water will encourage them to seek a new source. You can also place a rubber band around the feeder arm and pull the band over the dripper, opening the valve. The released droplets of water will attract the birds, and they will soon begin to peck at the drippers. Placing their feed close to The Chicken Fountain will also help them become familiar with the new source.

For a reluctant bird, place a bit of peanut butter and scratch feed on the end of the dripper.

How often should I clean The Chicken Fountain?

That really will depend on how diligent you have been to keep the lid on the unit and to supply it with fresh water. Ensuring no sunlight gets into the system by keeping it sealed will help stem the growth of algae. Supplying the system only with fresh clean water will ensure that the system stays fresh and clean.

Accommodating different size birds

Birds of different sizes inside the same flock are no problem. Just install The Chicken Fountain™ for the tallest birds and then provide a stable “step up” like a brick or stone to allow the smaller birds to reach the dripper. The larger birds can easily reach around the step up to get their water.

The water in the hose gets hot in the sun

We recommend installing The Chicken Fountain in a shaded area of your coop or pen to help keep the water cool. The garden hose should also be shaded where possible. Burying the hose is also an option.
